If you love blue in your home decor, you are in very good company. Blue home decor is one of the most searched and saved topics on Pinterest – and it’s easy to see why. Blue is arguably the most versatile, timeless color in home decorating, and it works beautifully in every room. I’ve gathered 43 beautiful ways to use blue in your home.

If you have been around Bluesky at Home for a while or you just searched ways to use blue in your home decor and found me, then it’s no secret – I love blue. I’m always looking for inspiration and ways to use blue in home decor.

What makes blue so special? It’s the color of the sky, the sea, and the horizon – colors that are naturally calming and inviting. Blue has a unique ability to feel both classic and fresh at the same time. Whether you love deep navy, soft powder blue, rich indigo, or the timeless combination of blue and white, there is a shade of blue that suits your home and style.

Blue is also remarkably flexible. It pairs beautifully with white – always and forever a classic combination – but it also works with warm neutrals like cream and linen, rich metals like gold and brass, and even other colors like green, coral, and blush. Different shades of blue work together too, creating a layered, collected look that feels both intentional and effortless.

Here at Bluesky at Home, blue isn’t just a color – it’s the heart of everything I do. I’ve been decorating with blue for years, from my former aqua sofa to my stenciled blue cabinet to my current white living room, where blue now lives entirely in the accessories – pillows, throws, chinoiserie pieces, and art. Blue has followed me through every decorating chapter, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Whether you want to go bold with a navy accent wall, add a touch of blue with throw pillows and accessories, or embrace the classic elegance of blue-and-white chinoiserie, this roundup has something for you. I’ve gathered 43 lovely images to illustrate beautiful ways to use blue in your home decor, room by room and category by category. Let’s dive in!

Blue can be used in big ways in your home decor:

  • walls – just one as an accent wall or an entire room
  • large pieces of furniture, such as a sofa, chair, cabinet, armoire or dresser
  • large pieces of art or in a gallery
  • drapery
  • wallpaper
  • accessories
  • rugs

NOTE: We’ll start at the front door with ways to use blue in your home. We’ll go room by room, with extra suggestions included.

Blue Front Doors

If our HOA would let me, I’d paint our front door blue. Instead, I’ll just share some great shades of blue that will make a front door pop and boost your curb appeal.

Blue in the Dining Room

A dining room is a lovely place to add any shade of blue, from on the walls, to the dining room chairs, art or accessories.

On the Dining Room Chairs

I recently updated our dining room chairs using a beautiful shade of blue velvet. My inspiration was a picture in Southern Home Magazine.

The fabric was extra from an earlier project (reupholstering a chair in the living room and creating an ottoman in the seating room) Our dining room needed more color, and using this blue velvet was the perfect solution. And it saved me a lot of money since I had already paid for the fabric.

I love this shade of blue – it’s elegant and classic, perfect for a dining room. The velvet adds a dressier feel to the dining room, which has a formal style.

I was also pleased that the blue in the chair seats picks up the blue in our rug.

We didn’t have enough blue velvet for the captain’s chairs. Fortunately, I found a patterned linen fabric with a slightly floral motif and two-toned blue that complements the solid blue velvet.

On the Walls

My friend Shelley of Calypso in the Country painted her dining room walls a deep navy blue. It’s a dramatic look that gives elegance and formality to the room.

Notice that Shelley also used blue in the checked fabric placemats.

Blue Accents in the Dining Room

Don’t want to paint your dining room walls blue? Another way to use blue in home decor is in accents and accessories.

This lovely dining room from Cassie of Hi Sugar Plum adds blue in a modern, almost watercolor ikat design in the drapes.

The navy stripe rug takes the blue from top to bottom.

At eye level, a collection of clue chinoiserie jars gathered in a white tray on the table adds the right touch of blue accents to this room.

Blue ceramics in a hutch or on a buffet are a stunning way to add blue to the dining room. I love using some of my chinoiserie to create a focal point and interest. Whatever blue accessories you have will work. Just arrange them until you have a pleasing arrangement.

Classic Blue in the Living Room

Blue is perfect for any living space, from casual to classic.

Blue Accessories

Let’s start with this beautiful living room from Randi of Randi Garrett Designs. She uses blue in all the accessories, from the rug to pillows, vases, and throws.

Even the blue trim on white pillows adds a special touch. This is such a classic, serene room.

Notice how the different shades of blue blend rather than clash, again showcasing how versatile blue is.

Blue in Patterns

In another beautiful blue living room, my friend KariAnne of Thistlewood Farms used a variety of patterns with blue as the common denominator.

Stripes, florals, geometrics, solids – it sounds like a lot of patterns, but it all works together for a soft and inviting effect.

The blue dishes and artwork on the walls flank the pretty picture window with soft blue drapes. The dishes each have a different pattern, too.

Blue Accent Chair

Accent chairs are perfect for using color. Since they usually stand alone, you can be bold with color and pattern.

A couple of years ago, we reupholstered the classic Bergere chair that I inherited from my parents. I remember this chair in my parents’ living room when I was a little girl. For decades, it was covered in a sage green that was pretty, but way past its prime. I knew that it would be beautiful in blue.

TIP: When reupholstering older furniture, be sure that the cushions are replaced with new filler in addition to the fabric.

Bookcase with Beautiful Blue Accessories

Bookcases offer multiple opportunities to add color to your living spaces. You can use multiple colors, but picking one and repeating it adds color saturation that gives it depth and importance.

This stylish bookcase below pops with blues in the books, vases, jars, pitchers, and even picture frames. These blue accessories from Rebecca at Boulevard West stand out beautifully against the bookcase’s white background.

It’s not just the blue color. What makes this arrangement work so well?

  • Variety of shapes – round and square, tall and short
  • Different sizes
  • Mix of materials – ceramics, porcelain, books, pictures frames, globe
  • Pops of metallic
  • Variety of heights
  • Several shades of blue

Although there is a large number of items on the bookcase, it doesn’t feel cluttered. Plenty of white space between each object keeps the look clean. Each shelf is different, but the entire bookcase is balanced.

I also love to fill our bookcase with blue accessories. This year, I used some of my chinoiserie and blue books to give the bookcase color and personality. The blue wool runner in front of the bookcase adds color, pattern, and warmth to our living space.

The blue chinoiserie with pink hydrangeas are from a set of 6 in my ETSY SHOP.

My Own Blue and White Master Bedroom

I have to share my own blue-and-white master bedroom.

The French blue Euro pillows (I also have a matching duvet) are a classic color that pairs with so many other blues. I love the pattern on the blue shams and the quilted coverlet I found online. The monogrammed boudoir pillows add a little touch of personality.

Blue in Pillows

Outdoors, blue adds a crisp, summery vibe. Here is my most recent blue and white outdoor summer tablescape.

Blue on the Patio

When we gave our backyard a total makeover a few years ago, I knew that blue would play a major role in our patio furniture.

Luckily, I found the shade of blue I wanted – dark blue/navy – that fit our love seat at Lowe’s.

Our four chairs had to have custom-made cushions. I found a great fabric for them at Cutting Corners. Along with the blue and white striped rug from Wayfair, our bluefocused patio seating area is fresh and interesting.

When Danielle of Finding Silver Pennies was refreshing her deck, blue was also her color scheme of choice. Great minds think alike.

She used a large blue-patterned outdoor rug and pillows to bring in big punches of blue.

Common Questions About Using Blue in Home Decor Answered

What is the most popular shade of blue for home decor?

Navy blue and soft powder blue are perennial favorites, but in 2026 Patina Blue and Transformative Teal were having a major moment. The most important thing is choosing a shade that works with your existing furniture, flooring, and natural light. Cool-toned rooms look beautiful with soft, muted blues, while warmer rooms can handle deeper, richer shades like navy or indigo. Check out this post about blue.

Does blue work in every room of the house?

Absolutely! Blue is one of the few colors that works beautifully in every room – living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways. Lighter shades of blue create a calm, airy feel in bedrooms and bathrooms, while deeper shades add drama and elegance to dining rooms and living rooms.

What colors pair best with blue in home decor?

Blue’s most classic pairing is white – it’s timeless, fresh, and never goes out of style. Blue also pairs beautifully with warm neutrals like cream, linen, and natural wood tones. For a more glamorous look, pair blue with gold or brass accents. Feeling adventurous? Blue and green, blue and coral, and blue and blush are all stunning combinations.

Is blue and white still in style for home decor?

Blue and white is not just still in style – it’s one of the most enduring color combinations in home decorating history. From classic chinoiserie to coastal cottage to modern farmhouse, blue and white transcends every decorating trend. It will never go out of style.

How do I add blue to a neutral room without repainting?

This is the easiest decorating update you can make! Start with throw pillows and pillow covers in your favorite shade of blue – they’re inexpensive, easy to swap seasonally, and make an immediate impact. Add a blue throw blanket, a blue-and-white vase or chinoiserie jar, blue artwork or prints, or a blue patterned rug. Even small touches of blue – a stack of blue books, a blue candle, a blue tray – can pull a neutral room together beautifully.

Can I mix blue with another cool color, such as green?

Yes, as long as the undertones work together. Tamara of Citrine Living mixes blue florals and other patterns as the primary color focus in this outdoor tablescape. The icing on the cake is bringing in a strong bunch of green to highlight the green in the beautiful tablecloth.outdoor tablescape in blues and greens
