Inspiration for The White Wine Sangria

One of my favorite books is But Mama Always Put Vodka in the Sangria by one of my favorite Southern writers, Julia Reed (I laughed myself silly reading her take on life in the South.). The book piqued my interest in sangria.

(Unfortunately, Julia passed away a few years ago, but her humor lives on.)

I prefer white wine (unless it’s a red with a great steak), so I was never a fan of red sangria.

Then Sweet Shark found this recipe in the August 2015 issue of Cuisine at Home, a favorite magazine of mine for many years. I decided that this cocktail was just the perfect one to cool you off.

After he made the white wine version of sangria, it became a new summer favorite.

Now I love sangria for its refreshing fruitiness. I prefer white wine or rosé for my sangrias. They are prettier and lighter than the traditional red wine sangria.

In 2016, Sweet Shark and I spent a few days in Barcelona before embarking on a Mediterranean cruise. One day, we discovered a large courtyard in Old Town Barcelona with restaurants. We had a wonderful lunch accompanied by the most amazing glass of white wine sangria, and it tasted almost like the one we make at home.

If you have never tried a white wine sangria, now it is the time!

Gather Your Fruit

The white sangria uses summer fruits, primarily those with white flesh. This recipe calls for peaches. If peaches are not yet in season, you can use a mango, which will work fine. We used a combination of peaches and apples. Pick a combination of fruit that you like that is in season.

  • oranges
  • mangos
  • peaches
  • nectarines
  • apples – look for crisp varieties
  • pears – although considered a winter fruit, pears are white-flesh. If you can find them in the warmer months, they add a nice flavor to the sangria

Gather Your Other Ingredients

  • 1 bottle white wine, such as Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Gris, or Sauvignon Blanc. For this batch, we used Tassajara, a lovely, affordable Chardonnay from Monterey, California.
  • Agave Nectar – available at the grocery store. It’s very concentrated, so adjust if you like more or less sweetness. It’s a sweetener commercially produced from several species of agave,
  • St-Germain (an elderberry liqueur), which you can find at the liqueur store. (See below for more information.)
  • Lemon-lime soda, such as Sprite or 7-Up

NOTE: St‑Germain is a French liqueur made with fresh elderflowers, handpicked in full bloom every spring. Up to one thousand carefully selected flowers to fill every bottle! The result is a finely crafted, perfectly balanced liqueur that leaves a lasting memory.

It has a delicate, floral, and slightly sweet flavor. It’s often featured in spritzes, but also pairs well with gin, vodka, and other spirits, adding a unique twist to classic and modern drinks.

Check out this resource if you would like more information about St. Germain.

Slice Your Fruit into Thin Slices

A sharp paring knife works best for this task.

I bought this nectarine a few days ago, so it was very ripe.

Combine All Your Ingredients and Chill

In a large pitcher, measure and combine all your ingredients: wine, soda, St-Germain liqueur, and the agave nectar. Stir to combine.

Add your fruit. Chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

NOTE: White wine sangria is meant to be served cold, so give it plenty of time to chill, especially if your white wine has not been chilled yet.

Serving the Best White Wine Sangria

Fill your wine glasses with ice. Pour the sangria into the glasses. Add a few slices of fruit as garnish.

We found these wine glasses last summer in the bar of the hotel where we were staying in Savannah. I loved them so much, I asked for the source and ordered four glasses. This set of four is very similar.

The great thing about this yummy summer white wine sangria is that you can make it just for two or double or triple the recipe to make a pitcher full.
