11 Stunning Summer Tablescape Ideas to Spice Up Your Table

Are you planning a dinner party this summer? Except for holiday time, summer is the biggest party time. I decided to take a look back at some of my favorite summer tablescapes. Here are 11 stunnning summer tablescape ideas to spice up your table.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, there are 4th of July celebrations, backyard parties, barbecue and pool parties, after-baseball game parties, and just-because parties.

Next week, Sweet Shark and I are hosting our first party of the summer. We invited new neighbors who are long-time friends of other neighbors. It’s a time to get to know these new neighbors better and be hospitable to old and new friends.

I have always loved having friends over for get-togethers of all sizes for special and “anytime” celebrations. Offering delicious food and drink is essential for welcoming company. Setting a lovely tablescape, whether indoors or outside, is an absolute requirement to having a enjoyable gathering.

These 11 summer tablescape ideas should give you plenty of inspiration for this summer and summers to come.

Do You Need a Theme for a Summer Party?

Does every party need a theme? For summer, maybe not.

Any party benefits from having a theme. It makes planning your menu, tablescape, and decorations easier.

For summer, it could be as traditional as coastal or nautical. Or simply a color theme based on the flowers you choose for a centerpiece. The 4th of July is a celebration we all love to have.

If you do want a theme for your gathering, here are some ideas to consider:

  • backyard BBQ – heat up the grill and use hot dogs, hamburgers, or ribs as your theme.
  • beach or pool party – bring out the floats, beach balls, and beach towels
  • luau or tropical island party – use bright colors in the flowers and tableware. Add plastic palm trees, sand and little umbrellas.
  • summer camp party – if your kids are going to or coming home from camp, this would be a fun theme to decor. Or relive your camp days.
  • Italian summer/Amalfi Coast party – use Mediterranean food as your menu and chic tableware.
  • margaritaville or tiki party – use margarita glasses as decorations and as your centerpiece. Put Jimmy Buffet on the CD player. Light up the tiki torches.
  • fiesta – decor with bright colors, Mexican food and music. Use flowers, such as hibuscus and mandevilla in your centerpiece. Use a colorful poncho as your tablecloth. Play mariachi music.
  • wine tasting party – bring out a collection of summer wines. Use wine bottles, wine corks, and other wine-theme tableware as your tablescape decor.
  • Christmas in July – bring out a few Christmas decorations, turn on the fire, and play Christmas carols.

These themes offer a variety of atmospheres, from relaxed and rustic to vibrant and tropical, making it easy to find the perfect fit for any summer celebration.

What Items Can Be Used in a Summer Tablescape?

Summer parties, except for those related to weddings, are usually more casual than other times of year. From the table to the serving pieces, to the food and the clothes we wear, summer entertaining is more casual and relaxed.

There are always table “ingredients” that are needed, whatever the season or the occasion. Unless you are having a “spur of the moment, paper plate gathering”, these items make any summer party special.

Here is a list of items that can be included in a summer tablescape:

  • Placemats or table runners in vibrant or natural colors. A tablecloth with a summer theme is great, too.
  • Linen or cloth napkins in bright, summery hues. If you have having a backyard barbeque, pretty paper napkins are the way to go.
  • Pretty glassware, such as colored or patterned glasses. If you are having your party by the pool, I would highly recommend using plastic glassware.
  • Light and airy tableware, including colorful or patterned plates and bowls, inspired by summer, such as seashells, driftwood, nautical, coastal, or citrus fruit.
  • Fresh flowers or greenery for centerpieces or accents. Summer flowers, such as hydrangeas, zinnias, sunflowers, geraniums, or roses, can be used in your centerpiece or other table decor.
  • Candlesticks or LED candles for ambiance, especially for outdoor settings.
  • Napkin rings, possibly with a floral or summer-theme design to match your other tableware.
  • Place cards, optionally decorated with your theme.
  • Lanterns or string lights for added height and evening atmosphere.
  • Coastal or nautical accents, like starfish, ropes, seashells, sea glass, or maritime-themed decor.
  • Fun summer-themed decorations, such as mini beach balls, pineapples, or flamingos.
  • Blow-up floats in the pool, such as flamingos, unicorns.
  • Fruit bowls or displays featuring watermelons, pineapples, lemons, limes, or other seasonal produce.
  • Patterned or colorful throw blankets for picnic-style settings.

These elements can be mixed and matched to create a tablescape that feels fresh, festive, and perfectly suited for summer gatherings.

Summer Tablescapes: 11 Ideas to Spice Up Your Summer Parties

These tablescape ideas span several years. Some are outdoors and some are indoors. They all have a theme, even if it is based just on color. I remember styling everyone, planning the event and setting the table. Some include DIY projects and have links to them. A few have links to menus, too.

Simple and Sophisticated Summer Tablescape

This outdoor tablescape was inspired by an image on Pinterest and part of a blog hop. I went super casual with woven chargers, but added a little elegance with the prettiest blue vintage wine glasses and linen toile napkins. Mixing casual and formal together always creates contrast and interest.

For the setting on our patio for four, I used our patio table as the foundation. It creats a cozy, intimate atmosphere.

Summer Dinner Party Inspiration for a Pretty Table

Having girlfriends over for a lunch or dinner allows for a more feminine tablescape. The occasion for this dinner party was a birthday party.

For this gathering of some girlfriends, I used some of my chinoiserie pieces paired with pink flowers and crystal glasses.

Big, Bold Tropical Tablescape

With a bold and bright tropical theme, it feels like you are dining outside by the pool or on the beach. Let me show you how easy it is to create a tropical summer tablescape that is a delight to dine at.

Japanese paper lanterns (made in China) and tissue-paper pom-poms in pink, green, aqua, and yellow were just the things to create a tropical centerpiece and table decor.

Easy Outdoor Summer Table Decor

The color scheme for this outdoor summer table decor is blue and white. It’s not the first time, nor will it be the last time, I use this color combination.

Also, like styling any space in your home, tablescape styling is an evolving process. Your original idea may not work out or you make changes as you go. It’s all OK as long as you are happy with your finished table decor.

This tablescape turned out to be one of my favorites. You’ve find a ton of good ideas for the prettiest outdoor table setting.

Pretty Pink Tablescape on the Patio

The theme of this pretty pink tablescape was breakfast for a few neighbors. The purpose of the small gathering was to have a visit before the heat of the summer date kicked in.

I combined pink checks, a pink and white striped pitcher and pink flowers to carry out the theme. The light menu paired with mimosas was just the think for girls’ get together.

Dinner Party in a Blue and White Tablescape

For this blue and white tablescape, I styled a more casual table. We would be hosting two couples. Both ladies love blue and white so I chose that as my color scheme. This tablecapse also mixes old and new elements, which is another idea to create interest on a table.

White hydrangeas from Trader Joe’s are perfect with the blue and white planter and the estate sale pitcher is not only practical but pretty.

TIP: Estate sales are wonderful resources for serving pieces, linens, and dinnerware at very reasonable prices.

Sunny Summer Tablescape

Nothing says summer more than a lovely, vibrant tablescape with bright yellow sunflowers.

The inspiration for this sunny summer tablescape was lemons. And since limes go with lemons, my color scheme would be yellow and lime green. And then I had to have some flowers; at first, I thought about sunflowers – I mean, the perfect happy summer flower.

Indoor Alfresco Summer Tablescape

Creating a summertime alfresco tablescape in 105˚ heat did not sound like fun. My plants would wilt, my candles would melt, the ice in our cocktails would melt, and my food would wither.

When I was gifted these beautiful pink candle holders and a lovely turkish towel, the idea for this summer tablescape was born.

When I was able to turn this outdoor tablescape into an indoor one, it turned out to be a great tablescape and dining experience. See how that happened – in case you ever have to change your summer dining plans.

Late Summer Tablescape with Greenery and Lavender

For a later summer gathering, I wanted a softer palette, a more relaxed and casual environment. That’s why I created a late summer blue and white tablescape with lavender as the main floral ingredient.

My vision is to have a few neighbors over for a light brunch. All I have to do is add more fresh fruit, a quiche, and a flavored sweet iced tea.

Sea Grass Bottles for a Summer Centerpiece

Do you love the breezy vibe of coastal colors? Here is how I used DIY sea glass bottles for a coastal tablescape. They add a colorful touch of coastal vibe to an outdoor tablescape.
Enjoying this colorful backdrop on a lovely summer evening is special.

Mamma Mia! Tablescape in the Summer

This tablescape is one of my favorites. A girlfriend get-together and my love of Mamma Mia! inspired this coastal theme in aqua and white.

I will serve lunch in our breakfast room, which is on the bright side of our house, surrounded by windows, the swimming pool, and the greenery of our backyard.

Beachy sand and aqua in marbles and tiny DIY umbrellas, records, and “dancing queen” placecards set the fun scene.

Guess what was playing on the CD player?
