Creating My Patriotic Basket Decor
This basket decor will add a sense of patriotism to any patriotic holiday. It will also work in several places in your home:
- your entry
- coffee table
- breakfast room table
- dining room table
- mantel – depending on the depth of your mantel
- kitchen counter
- patio table
- front porch
I knew right off that I would style this arrangement for our entry. I like our entry to be the first sign of holiday or seasonal decor when friends come over.
Here is what Rachel used in her design:
- a wooden tray*
- a woven basket
- a can with flowers
- an American flag
- some napkins
*When I first looked at Rachel’s image, I thought her basket was sitting on a wooden tray. After I finished my basket decor, I realized that her basket was on the stair steps or a wood floor.
I would bet that most of us have these items in our homes already. If not, they are very inexpensive to find at the dollar store, thrift shop or big box stores light Target, Hobby Lobby, or HomeGoods.
I knew that I had everything that Rachel used in her centerpiece. It would also be easy to switch a few things out with my personal touch.
Here is what I would use in my design:
- a round woven tray
- a vintage bamboo basket with a handle
- three decoupaged terra cotta pots in a stars and striped motif
- faux flowers in red, white, and blue
- two small American flags
- one blue star from the Dollar Spot
- one blue and white paper pinwheel
- a bow of red, white, and blue ribbon
Assembling the DIY Basket Decor for 4th of July
To be honest, I wasn’t sure how I would combine all these elements until I started placing something here and there. After a few minutes of contemplating, the design came together and took me about 15 minutes. This 4th of July basket decor with recycled materials came together so easily.
A WOVEN TRAY
Although I have had this woven tray for a while, it’s not vintage. I bought it online. It’s a great tray for any style or purpose.

VINTAGE BAMBOO BASKET
I bought this interesting basket several years ago at an estate sale. I’ve used it several times for different vignettes and centerpieces. I like the shape, the finish, and the material. The sides look like bamboo that has been split in half.
Here is another way I used this vintage basket for a springtime vignette.

I stuffed the basket with crumbled newspaper for height and stability in the next step in the process.
BLUE AND WHITE STRIPED DISH TOWEL
Instead of a napkin, I used a favorite dish towel on top of the vintage basket. My older daughter gave it to me last year. Its blue and white stripes are perfect for our kitchen.

Don’t you love that ruffle on the bottom?
THREE DECOUPAGE TERRA COTTA POTS
Instead of using one can as Rachel did, I used these red, white, and blue terra cotta pots that are made from paper mache. I decoupaged them with stars and striped napkins. (You can see the project in the post linked above.)

Decoupage is such an easy project and it’s one of my favorites. They have been used multiple times.
FAUX FLOWERS IN RED, WHITE, AND BLUE
All these flowers were in my faux flower stash.
I placed the white flowers in the center pot for more height with the red roses and blue flowers on each side. Those red roses are also used for Valentine’s Day decorations and Kentucky Derby party decor.

SMALL AMERICAN FLAGS
We have dozens of these small flags. They are perfect for small arrangements like this one. I put one in each of the red and blue flower pots.

RED, WHITE, AND BLUE BOW
I don’t remember when I made this bow that had been previously used for a patriotic wreath. It’s been reused several times. It was easy to tie it around the base of the basket handle.

WOOD STARS
I have at least half a dozen of these stars in blue and red. I’ve used them for several years in different places. They have come in handy so many times over the years for wreaths, banners and other decor.

BLUE AND WHITE PINWHEEL
I have several pinwheels in both red and white, red polka dots, blue and white stars and stripes.
I opened the pinwheel and set it on its flat side in the basket.
A Little More Patriotic Flair
I thought the entry needed a little more color and pizazz on the dresser.
I added several strands of red, white, and blue, white and silver beads and bangles to the lamp shades on each side of this 4th of July craft. I think the beads add just the right touch of color and bling to the entry.

I’m very pleased with how this basket decor turned out. It was so easy, quick, and didn’t cost me a dime.
