Whether your front porch is large, small, or non-existent like mine, there is something so nostalgic about a front porch. I have a front door area so I yearn for a front porch. These front porch ideas can give you inspiration for a front door design.
Our front porches and entries are the first thing our neighbors and guests see. In summer, more neighbors are out, enjoying the fresh air, walking their dogs, or getting some exercise. Now is when we want out front porches to look their best.
As soon as the weather starts to warm up in spring, we yearn to be outside. These front porch ideas will work for spring and summer outdoor enjoyment. These front porch ideas can be used from March to September, depending on your climate.
The biggest variable would be the type of flowers you have outside on the front porch.
Why Do We Love Creating a Pretty Front Porch?
A comfortable front porch is an old-time tradition. What can we do on a front porch?
- sit out front in a rocking chair with a tall glass of sweet iced tea
- enjoy the morning newspaper
- watch the kids playing in the front yard
- wave at the passing neighbors
- listen to the birds chirping in the morning from your flower-filled front porch
- enjoy a glass of wine in the evening on a comfortable porch swing
I have a confession: we don’t have much of a front porch.
No room for a rocking chair or a porch swing.
No room for a table to place my glass of iced tea
No room for a sign or rugs or benches.
It’s the one major thing I would change about our home. I have dreams about front porches.
I do love to drool over other people’s front porches and take whatever ideas I can. Any little thing for a summer front porch is better than nothing.
Even though we don’t have a front porch, I still try to create a welcome spot at our front door.
I have found great ideas for our limited space. All these front porch ideas can also be used for a patio or terrace.
What to Include on a Summer Front Porch?
What do you think the perfect summer front porch should have?
- comfortable seating
- potted flowers and greenery
- tables for drinks or a book
- hanging baskets
- rugs
- a porch swing
- pillows
- accessories
- a wreath on the front door
- something vintage
Ready to see my suggestions? Let’s step outside and look at all the pretty porches.

1 – Flower Pots on a Summer Front Porch
One thing that every front porch needs is pretty flowers. This front porch of my friend Coco of The Crowned Goat is adorned with beautiful flower pots. Hydrangeas and petunias are the show stoppers.
The other thing a front porch needs is comfy seating. Coco uses white wicker as a love seat, table and chair.

2 – Southern Coastal Front Porch
My friend Tracey of Porch Daydreamer has one of the prettiest porches. Tracey and I met at Haven and hung out in Charleston one year.
Tracey changes her covered porch for the different seasons. This spring/summer version has plenty of seating anchored by a beautiful rug.
Don’t you love the porch swing? All those pillows make for comfy relaxation.
Lots of hanging ferns and palms with flowers make this such a beautiful place to enjoy from a morning with coffee to evening with wine.

3 – Rocking Chairs on the Front Porch
Who doesn’t love relaxing in a rocking chair? It’s the ultimate “chill-out” seating spot.
Two simple rocking chairs on this front porch welcome you to “sit a spell” (Southern saying). This front porch design from Beth of Home Stories A to Z gets its interest from the pop of blue.
Touches such as rugs and pillows give a front porch a warm and welcoming feeling. Add the pop of blue in the side table and this porch feels like an outdoor living space.

4 – Estate Sale Finds
Everyone loves rocking chairs. Find some at an estate sale or flea market or grandma’s attic like Southern State of Mind.

5 – Vintage Touches and a Painted Door
This is one big front porch. The size allows for pieces of furniture that give it a lovely “living room” feel. The first thing I notice is the beautiful blue front door. It’s a showstopper.
What gives this warm-weather front porch from Susan of Saw, Nails and Paint extra interest is the addition of a small dresser. The galvanized pails, lantern, and watering cans add a great vintage vibe.
A door hanger also adds more interest to the door as well as a pop of color.

6 – Use Black and White on the Front Porch
When your large front porch is a blank slate, where do you begin?
Get advice from Martina at The Lived in Look for starting from scratch. I especially love the black lantern and the black and white throw blanket.
The lantern and candle add an inviting feel, especially in the evening when the summer sun goes down.

7 – Mix Color and Pattern
Mixing patterns and colors outside is just as impactful on a front porch as it can be inside.
I love how Heather of Southern State of Mind mixed black and white pillows and flower pots with the blue chinoiserie~style garden stool.
The vintage table adds charm and a place for more planters with flowers. The deep cushioned seats on the rattan chairs provide comfy seating to enjoy a summer day. I envision reading a good book with a glass of iced tea.

8 – The Ultimate Summer Front Porch Swing
Who wouldn’t love to take a nap on a summer afternoon on this large porch swing?
Doreen of The Art of Everyday Living has created an inviting place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. I love the rope hangers. The bright blue pillows and stripe throw add to the pretty setting.
A pop of green in the plant stand adds texture and the blue garden stool a place to set down a drink.

9 – Rocking Chairs and Vintage Pieces
Once again, seating is so important on a front porch. Ann of On Sutton Place uses a blue check pillow in her summer front porch setting.
Green ferns add natural color. The wicker table gives a place for a few vintage containers with flowers. This is such a nice spot to enjoy the front porch.

10 – Signs on the Porch
If you love signs of any sort, use them on your front porch. Signs come in several different styles and set a mood for your front porch.
The green plants on this front porch add color and a sense of relaxation. They probably love the warm weather, but protection from the sun.

11 – Add a Beautiful Railing to your Summer Porch
We all love before and afters. This summer front porch renovation by Chica and Jo takes you step~by~step through a front porch do~over. The element I loved most was the new DIY porch railing.
The old chair painted a bright blue and the blue hydrangeas – everyone’s favorite summer flower – add the perfect touch of color to match summer skies.
Do you notice the “haint blue” ceiling? It’s a southern tradition.

12 – Summer Front Porch Idea: Profusion of Flowers
Using different colors in flowers in pots is almost a must for a summer front porch. Obviously, how much sun or shade your porch gets will determine the variety of flowers you choose. Our front door faces west, so that is always a major consideration.

13 – Another Summer Front Porch with a Blue Ceiling
Blue ceilings are traditional on front porches in the South. It’s called “haint blue”. Add some luscious blue hydrangeas and comfortable seating. You’ll have a beautiful spot for relaxing on a summer morning like this one on a small cottage.

14 – Create a Nostalgic Feel with Vintage Items
Bicycles always remind me of summertime – riding bikes through the neighborhood and to the neighborhood swimming pool.
Combining vintage finds like this bicycle, galvanized pitcher, old door and stool struck just the right tone for a summer front porch. Thanks to Sarah Joy of Sarah Joy Blog for this nostalgic idea.

15 – Navy Blue Front Door
This navy blue front door with a matching doormat from Nesting with Grace creates a warm and welcoming setting.
This front porch has all the right elements for summer: green plants, a place to sit, a rug to soften the hard spaces, and a touch of red, white and blue on the front door basket.

16 – Summer Wreath for a Bright Front Door
As I’ve mentioned, we don’t have a true front porch, but I do try to create the feeling of one.
To do that, I made a colorful summer setting for the front door area. To get the vibe I was after, I made a flowered summer wreath. Then I bought this bright colored rug for our front door. It adds a great pop of summer – like a beach towel – to the front door wreath.

17 – Honey Bee Theme on the Front Porch
If you are a lover of honey bees and the hive theme, then take a look at all these ideas from Jodie-Marie. These front porch examples are buzzing with charm! From rustic grapevine wreaths with burlap bows and sunflowers to bold black-and-white mesh wreaths with glittering accents, you’ll find the cutest ideas for a summer front porch.

18 – Front Porch in Black, White, and Green
I love this clean black, white and green palette from Suzy at Worthing Court.

19 – Front Porch in Red and Blue
If you build a barn, they will come.
With the 4th of July in the middle of the summer, a palette of red, white, and blue is a perfect color combination for a summer front porch. This brand-new “surburbarn” got a fun front porch design with metal furniture and a red and blue color palette.
All you would have to do for 4th of July celebrating is add a few flags and switch out the pillows. Check out these easy star pillows I made.
If you want an even easier patriotic version, try this no-sew patriotic pillow idea.

20 – Decorating a Small Front Porch for Summer
If you have a small front porch, but want to give if a large dose of summer style, then check out what Kate of A Hundred Affections did with her space. From using small stools for holding container flowers to small vintage accessories, she created a warm and inviting space in spite of its small size.

21 – Fire Pit on the Summer Front Porch
What attracted me to this beautiful front porch in whites and woodsy touches was the fire pit. In my part of the country, no one would ever think of lighting a fire in the summer. I do realize there are places that even in the summer can have cool to chilly evenings.
The rustic wicker swing and cozy rug – plus the sweet pup – create a lovely place to spend a cool summer night. Deb and Danelle are the creators of this relaxing front porch.
