It feels like our spring weather has finally settled in. After several days of unseasonally chilly weather, it is now warm and sunny. We couldn’t ask for more perfect spring days.
Yesterday I took advantage of the warm and sunny morning to start decorating our front door area. We don’t have a front porch (that would be a dream come true), but I have to focus on other ways to decorate our small front door area.
So far I have a pretty woven basket with faux flowers (I made it as part of a Pinterest Challenge.) that I moved outside and hung on the front door. Then yesterday I planted a pot I painted last summer with sun-patien and white lobelia. A large piece of our leftover artificial grass acts as a welcome mat until I can look for a new mat.
There are certain things that every front door space can use to make it more welcoming, attractive, and pretty. I have a long list below. We can’t incorporate them all into our front door area nor should we. But we should include a few for a pretty setting.

Using Crates for Flower Containers
Wood crates make great planters for fresh flowers. What a pretty pop of color! Michelle of Chalkboard Blue shows you how to make them from scratch. Isn’t that pink child’s chair the cutest? Shows how effective a vintage item can be on a front porch.
Ferns, Planters, and a Ladder
Charity of Mornings on Macedonia admits that front porch sittin’ is one of her favorite things and you can see why. Here’s a great way to use a vintage ladder as a plant stand. Greenery in the form of ferns and caladiums is a soft introduction to spring. A variety of small pots are the perfect finishing touch.
Hydrangeas and Bench
You can never go wrong with big pots of hydrangeas on your front porch. They are one of my very favorite spring and summer blooming flowers. Ceres of The Pink Dream has included the perfect spot to while away a summer afternoon and enjoy these gorgeous blooms – a lovely bench with a comfy throw pillow
Geraniums and Stripes
Geraniums are another tried and true spring and summer flower. Isn’t that tall stripe planter the best? It creates a great focal point at the front door. You won’t believe how Kelly Elko made it. Notice that she also has a welcome mat, a basket with greenery on the front door, and a decorative object for interest.
Yellow Flowers with Stencil Planter
I’m a sucker for anything stenciled and this pretty bright blue planter full of fresh flowers is a great way to add a focal point to your front porch. Sonja and Jane of Sustain My Craft Habit show you how easy it is to make it. Notice the pretty throw pillows on a comfy woven chair.
Red Geraniums and Vintage Chair
Don’t you love this vintage folding green chair? Mixed with gorgeous geraniums in a vintage bowl, it’s sure to bring a smile to visitors. Pam of House of Hawthornes knows how to create a small effective focal point.
Rocking Chair, Ladder and Stripe Rug
There is something about a rocking chair on a porch that says “come and sit a spell”. Brooke of Re-Fabbed mixed a classic stripe rug, the all-important side table, and pops of yellow flowers (can you see the yellow polka-dot rain boot?). This porch is a place for whiling the day away. For a touch of natural color, the wood ladder is the perfect place for decorative items.
Porch Swing and Rattan Stand
Porch swing – how do I love thee, let me count the ways. There is nothing more iconic in the South than a porch swing. Amanda of The Ginger Home added a little metal side table and woven planter stands with potted ferns for a nice contrast with the white swing and window trim. All you need is a glass of sweet iced tea and a copy of Steel Magnolias.
Lantern and Potted Plant
This image really focuses on this pretty rustic lantern containing a potted plant. There is so much more to see from Michelle of Thistlekey Lane, like a lovely spring wreath and lots of planters with colorful flowers.
Black Rocking Chairs, Side Table, and Stripe Rug
Another example of rocking chairs and a black and white stripe rug. Add throw pillows in a classic buffalo check for comfy rocking. The white garden stool supports a brass lantern for a simple, but traditional porch scene. Thanks to Martina of The Lived in Look.
Pink Door, Comfy Chair, Throw, and Sign
Are you brave enough to paint your front door pink? This one had me at hello. Lolly Jane definitely doesn’t have a problem with a pink-themed front porch. Love the Adirondack chair with the pink throw and puffy pillow. Next to the potted flower is a sweet pitcher for interest and a touch of whimsy.
Farmhouse Porch with Curtain
Talk about a coy front porch. Rhonda of Hallstrom Home has included it all. The single bed acts as a sofa/bench for front porch napping. The curtains add a layer of privacy and coziness. The vintage pitcher with greenery (lavender?) and the blue vintage pitcher on the wood side table provide the most relaxing setting. There is even a vintage mirror on the wall. A woven rug adds warmth and softness to the porch floor.
Deep Blue Door and Spring Wreath
No spring or summer front porch is complete without a beautiful flower wreath or basket. This large one from Ann of On Sutton House is beautiful against the rich blue-painted front door. Don’t miss the white planters with greenery on each side of the front door.
Spring Front Door Basket
Having just created a flower basket for our front door, I was impressed with this pretty woven basket arrangement and the soft color combination from Doreen of Hymns and Verses.
Blue Flowers and Curtain Cozy
This front porch is so welcoming. There is a cozy chair with a throw and pillows. A fern on a plant stand and a lantern add the little details. A vintage chest of drawers with an olive basket of blue hydrangeas. I bet Susan of Saw Nail and Paint has her neighbors dropping by daily. Don’t you love the curtain at the end of the porch?
Patterned Layered Welcome Mat
Layered front door mats have been popular for a few years. I’ve done this myself. Here, the combination of an abstract partner with a “hello” mat fits the bill. Stacey of Wilshire Collections provides a small chair and comfy cushions next to a plant stand as a place to sit as well as color and charm.
Whimsical Farmhouse Front Porch
Can anyone resist this front porch entry with vintage table, lantern, and sculptures? The potted pot of flowers sits on a wood stump. How fun is that? There are so many fun things to catch your eye from Dannyelle of Life is a Party.
