Black and White Fall Tablescape with Rustic Flair

Have you ever thought about creating a black and white fall tablescape? Me neither. So it was time.

I have never thought about designing a black and white fall tablescape. I usually opt for blues and metallics.

I decided to create a totally different color scheme this year. A bolt of black and white gingham ribbon sparked me to try a black and white fall tablescape.

I love gingham and black and white is one of my favorite color combinations. When I found a bolt of this classic pattern at the Dollar Tree, I thought why not try it for a fall tablescape?

I’m happy to have this opportunity to share my first black and white themed fall table.

My Rustic Table Base

I set my fall table in our breakfast room since this table would be just for Sweet Shark and me. For a rustic, casual look, I used my burlap tablecloth. It’s actually a rectangle so I folded it in half for our round table.

Black and White Centerpiece

Ideas for design can come from anywhere and be unexpected. The idea for my centerpiece was inspired by a black cloth bag that we found in a box of fall decorations. I have no idea where it came from.

How about using it to hold flowers? I placed a glass vase inside ~ perfect fit. I placed the black bag on a white charger from Dollar Tree which I already had.

A quick trip to the grocery store for white flowers was all I needed. I picked baby’s breath because it was the whitest.

My Black and White Pumpkin

In going through our fall decorations, I found a previously~painted gold pumpkin. I decided to paint it white with a black stem.

The black and white pumpkin needed some embellishment. Since this is a fall tablescape, I decided to focus on the word “fall”. I stenciled “fall” in 4 different fonts all over the pumpkin.

I finished the fall pumpkin with raffia tied on the stem. Raffia always adds a rustic, fall look.

My black and white gingham ribbon from Dollar Tree showed up here.

I set the pumpkin on a cake stand covered with a black napkin tied with more raffia.

Black and White Place Settings

When I pulled out my white Dollar Tree charger, I remembered 2 that had the white covering coming off.

I removed the rest of the white film and painted both chargers with black Rescue Restore paint from A Makers’ Studio. This color is called Little Black Dress. It’s a true black.

For a focal point on the chargers, I added a new fall stencil. This is one that I used for a recent fall yard art sign.

Next came clear glass plates from Dollar Tree. I used clear so that the design on the chargers would show.

White napkins tied with the black and white gingham ribbon that inspired this fall tablescape came next.

I used black plastic utensils for a really casual table setting.

Wine glasses got the black and white gingham treatment.

Black and White Sweet Treats

While standing in line to buy my white flowers, I spied the perfect sweet treats for my black and white fall tablescape ~ chocolate!!

The chocolate treats completed my fall tablescape. I can’t wait to treat Sweet Shark to a casual dinner.

Thank you for letting me share this black and white fall tablescape with you. It’s been a first time color scheme for me and I hope you will try it too.

Great DIY tips too, as I always try to shop my house first and it is fun to see how others do the same!

  13. hi Carol, you had me at black and white, my very favorite color combo! Your stenciled fall pumpkin is adorable, and so clever to use clear plates to get double duty out of your cute stenciled painted chargers. Isn’t it fun to stumble across something in your stash that works perfectly like that black bag for your vase! I would have never chosen baby’s breath but it works so well, with an airy feel like raffia. Lovely and unique fall table!

  14. You’ve once again inspired me two do something on my list! There are days I visit your blog and I just can’t wait to get out the paint or a stencil or whatever! Today it’s your burlap tablecloth. I have two burlap Christmas coffee bags that I’ve been saving for a fun, new project. You’ve inspired me to use them as a tablecloth for a future Christmas table. And I’m thinking because of your use of black and white, I just might have to add a buffalo check or something similar. This is why I love bloggers! If I don’t know what to do with something, somebody in the blog world will inspire me. And this is so much more fun than just scrolling through Pinterest. It’s more personal. Thanks Carol, I simply adore this table!
