Inspiration for this Fall Felt Leaf Wreath

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been searching for fall decoration ideas for you and me to use in our homes this year.

One of the fall garland ideas piqued my interest – using felt to make a fall garland. Then, as I searched for wreath ideas, I thought, “Why not use the felt fall leaf idea to make a wreath?”

I had already made a fall vignette for our entry. I used a woven tray, three vintage ceramic bottles, DIY burlap-covered books, and a vintage candle holder filled with dried magnolia leaves.. Faux flowers completed the vignette.

I had not yet made a wreath for our mirror, as I always do. So the idea for a fall wreath made with fall leaves was solidified. Using the colors of the vintage bottles as my guide, I was inspired and ready to get started.

Supplies to Make Your Fall Leaf Felt Wreath

You only need a few supplies, and you probably have some of them already. I only had to buy the two main elements of this project.

How to Create Your Own Fall DIY Felt Leaf Wreath

This project is very easy, but it does take a while to draw and cut out your leaves. This is the perfect time to watch a movie or football game – I watched the Texas – OU game!

Gluing them to the wire wreath took me about 45 minutes. I had to stop once to recharge my glue gun battery, so I ate lunch.

Step 1 – Choose your leaf colors and leaf shapes. I used three colors and three leaf shapes. I forgot to take a picture of the gold felt and my simplest leaf template.

Step 2 – Use your leaf template and marker to draw the leaves on the felt.

Step 3 – Cut out your felt leaves.

NOTE: The order you draw and cut out your felt leaves is totally up to you. I drew the leaves on the felt and them cut them out. Then I repeated with the 2nd and 3rd leaf template and felt.

I ended up with 38 leaves. The number of leaves you need depends on the size of your wire wreath.

Step 4 – Add a piece of wax paper or craft paper to your work surface to protect it from the hot glue

Step 5 – Heat your glue gun and begin attaching each leaf to the wire wreath. I found that it was easiest to add the glue to the back of a leaf rather than adding the glue to the wreath.

Step 6 – Designing your felt leaf wreath. How you add your leaves, in what color or shape arrangement, is totally up to you. These wreaths are meant to be customizable. The colors you chose, the shape of the leaves, the number of leaves gives each leaf wreaeth its individual look.

I applied all the gold leaves first. Then I went back and tucked in the other two shapes and colored leaves (tan and brown) in between the gold leaves.

When you have the arrangement that you like, your wreath is done. You may need to make more leaves, or you may have some left over. I ended up with one extra leaf.

Check your leaves. I went around the wreath and added more glue in places to make some leaves more securely attached to others.

That’s how easy this wreath is to make. I didn’t add a bow since I thought the leaves were enough as is.

NOTE: If you’ve never used felt, it’s a very easy material to work with. It cuts easily, it doesn’t ravel or fray, and it takes glue very well.

Hanging Your Wreath

This wreath can be used in several places:

  • your mantel
  • on a cabinet
  • on a hutch
  • on a door
  • on the wall
  • on your front door—if the door is protected from the elements.

I knew from the beginning that the wreath would hang on our entry mirror. I made a loop hanger with thick, strong thread to hang the wreath. We have a small nail in the top of our mirror for hanging wreaths and other decor.

The colors of the leaf wreath pick up the colors of the vintage ceramic jars in the fall vignettes, our torchier lights, and the fall wall art rabbit prints that I made. Originally, they were on our mantel, but I moved them to our entry.

Do you notice the dried magnolia leaves in the basket tray? I gather them every fall from my neighbor’s yard.

I think that our entry is complete for fall now.
