Great Books You Should Read this Summer
When summer arrives, one of the top things I look forward to is extra time for reading. What awesome books have I read that I would recommend for summer reading? Here are great books you should read this summer.
As the warm weather arrives and lazy days stretch ahead, summer presents the perfect opportunity to lose yourself in a captivating book.
Whether you’re lounging by the pool (my favorite spot), escaping to the beach (that’s really my top pick), or simply savoring the sunshine from your backyard, a great read can transport you to new worlds. Books provide a welcome respite from the daily grind.
I’m an avid reader and I always have a stack of books on my nightstand. Having that next book in sight is like having a drawer full of candy bars. Anytime I can get lost in a good book is the best time for reading.
This summer reading list will give you plenty of suggestions for escape, learning, and finding thought-provoking topics. If you have already started a summer reading list, then consider adding some of these compelling titles to your reading list.
Why Summer is the Perfect Time to Get Lost in a Good Book
With vacations, long weekends, and a generally more relaxed schedule, summer offers time to take a break from the usual hustle and bustle of life.
Reading books can help you relax and recharge during the summer.
As you become engrossed in a book, your mind shifts its focus away from the busyness of everyday life, allowing you to unwind and de-stress. The quiet moments spent with a good book can help you achieve a sense of calm and tranquility, essential for recharging during the summer months.
Reading requires your undivided attention. It encourages you to be present in the moment and fully engaged with the story, the characters, and the dialogue.
This mindful state can help you disconnect from distractions and worries, allowing you to truly relax and recharge your mental and emotional batteries.
One of the great advantages of reading during the summer is the flexibility it offers. You can read anywhere – at the beach, in a park, on an airplane, or even in the comfort of your own backyard. You can seamlessly incorporate reading into your summer routine.
I never feel like I have enough time for reading. So the extra time for reading in the summer is a bonus.
Favorite Books to Recommend for this Summer
This list is made up of books I’ve recently read and books that I’ve read in other summers. Some are new releases and some are several years old. There are classics, historical fiction, romantic fiction, action, spy/mystery, and non-fiction. Some are funny, most are serious, some are mindless “beach books” and some are thought-provoking and deep.
Some books are ones I’ve read in previous summers. I have kept a running list of the books I read for decades. I include the name of the author, the type of book, month and year I read the book. I also include if I own the book or borrowed the book.
My primary source of books is our church library. I check out books from the library and buy a ton at the annual book sale in February.
I also order books – alot – from Amazon. I especially love finding good books at independent bookstores.
The Classics
Here are some classic books that are perfect for summer reading and should be on your must-read list; you might have read these books when you were in high school or college:
I read all of these in high school for the first, but not the last, time.
- The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Set in the summer on Long Island, this novel captures the decadence and excess of the Roaring Twenties. The lavish parties, romance, and tragic storyline make it an ideal summer read.
- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I recently reread this Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about justice, racism, and innocence in the American South that has become a timeless classic. Its coming-of-age story is both poignant and gripping.
- The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. Follow the troubled teenager Holden Caulfield as he navigates the summer in New York City after being expelled from prep school. This influential novel perfectly captures teenage angst and alienation.
- Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. The beautiful story of the four March sisters as they navigate love, loss, and growing up during the American Civil War era. The themes of family and friendship make this a classic summer novel.
- These timeless novels not only provide great summer reading entertainment but also offer profound insights into human nature, making them literary classics worth revisiting or discovering for the first time.
