Christmas Socking Styling Display Inspiration
Christmas seems to come earlier and earlier. This year is no exception. Our Pinterest Challenge (usually the fourth Tuesday of the month) is jumping on Santa’s sleigh a week early to bring you our collective ideas for styling Christmas stockings.
Our hostess, Cindy of County Road 407, has chosen a lovely inspirational image from Home by Heidi.

As you can see, Heidi’s use of stockings is very traditional. To enhance this all-important focal point, she also uses:
- white stockings hung on the mantel adorned with black ribbon and silver bells
- green garland
- bright red balls
- white cone-shaped Christmas trees on the mantel
- a Christmas sign
For this Pinterest Challenge, Cindy left our interpretation totally open. Instead of trying to recreate Heidi’s stocking display, I’m going to show you where we have hung our stockings and other ways I’ve found to inspire you.
Are you joining me from Lora Bloomquist? Lora is sharing the cutest stocking garland. I’m excited that you are here.

Brainstormed List of Places to Display Stockings
Before I share where we have hung stockings in our home, I racked my brain and Pinterest for ideas for stocking displays. The ones with an asterisk* are ones I have used and will share below. Here is what I came up with:
Furniture:
- Bookshelf, hutch, or built-in shelving
- Console table
- Dining room or kitchen chairs (on the back)
- Bedroom headboard

- Dresser or buffet
- On a mirror
- On the staircase*
Walls and Doors:
- Wall-mounted hooks or Command hooks
- Wall-mounted shelf
- Plate rack

- Interior doors
- Curtain rod in a window
- Door knobs

Free-Standing Displays:

- Coat rack (vintage or painted)
- Room divider or screen

Creative and Unique Spots:
- A tree branch hung on the wall

- Kitchen island or peninsula
- Plate rack or display shelf
- Gallery wall
- Window sill (for smaller stockings)
- Staircase/banister*

- Piano
- Bench at the foot of the bed
- Cabinet hardware or knobs

- Stove top hood*
- On the Christmas tree

Can you believe that there are such things as stocking display hangers? I discovered several varieties online.
From repurposing vintage ladders and decorating staircases to creating cozy vignettes on bookshelves and console tables, these stocking display ideas prove that you can honor this cherished tradition anywhere in your home.
Displaying Our Christmas Stockings
Our Christmas stockings are a special part of our Christmas traditions. All five of our stockings are handmade needlepoint. I made the ones for my three kids and me. Sweet Shark’s sister made the ones for him and my step-son.

Without a doubt, the first place we hung these stockings was in the first home that we built together. I wish I had a picture of these stockings hanging on the beautiful Austin fieldstone fireplace surround. I’m sure there is one in a box somewhere.
One of the first things we bought was a set of beautiful brass reindeer stocking hangers. I’m almost positive we bought them at Pottery Barn, but they don’t have the same style anymore. I do think this reindeer set of two stocking holders is very nice.
This style of stocking holders is also pretty and very simple.
These stockings have graced our mantel many times.

There certainly have been many variations over the years.

Stockings on a Vintage Lander
Several years ago, I finally found the vintage ladder I had been searching for in Atlanta. My older daughter brought it to Dallas – 5 months after I bought it! It typically holds seasonal throws. This one looks very vintage.

Just for fun, I decided to see what the stockings would look like on the ladder. This is a cute way to display stockings, but it definitely needs some decorative touches to make it stand out. I can see adding “hooks” with red velvet ribbon or a big bow in the center to fill in and add more color and texture.

Stockings on the Stove Hood
This may be an idea you’ve never thought of. Usually, I hang DIY Christmas tiles on the flat front part of our stove hood.

One year, I found cute little red stockings at one of the craft stores. They fit perfectly in the space for a fun look. I added a little green bow to the top and hund them from the same hook I use for the tiles.

Christmas Stockings Displayed on the Staircase
I don’t remember why, but a few years ago, I decided to try hanging the stockings on the banister of the staircase. Paired with greenery, this has become our favorite place to display the stockings.

Sweet Shark likes to see the stockings from his bar. As you can see, we sometimes change the order of the stockings.
I would bet that the stockings will return to the staircase this Christmas – unless I decide to use one of the ideas I shared, which I may do.
I hope you enjoyed the information about places to display your Christmas stockings and how I have hung our Christmas stockings.

So many great ideas here Carol! I like how the stockings look hung on the stairs with the garland! Have a blessed Thanksgiving!
Carol, your classic family stockings are such a treasure and look gorgeous on the mantel or stair railing! I also love the little stockings that spell snow. Such a clever idea! It’s always a treat to see your beautiful home decorated for the holidays! Big hugs!
I’ve never thought to hang our stockings anywhere but the mantel so your ideas have me wanting to make a change. I love the ladder and the stairs! Everything looks great and your stockings look precious. True works of art. pinned
Carol, I love how you’ve hung mini stockings over the range and stockings on the old ladder, but I think I love them the best coming down the staircase banister! I miss hanging them from our old house’ railings. They were fun to decorate! Happy memories… 🙂 Great ideas from the sources you chose, too.
Enjoy your beautiful stockings and home all decorated for the holidays,
and Happy Thanksgiving,
Barb 🙂
Our stockings hung on an old ladder (with greens in each) is one of my most pinned pins. I do also love them hanging on the stairway. The mantel can get it’s own moment then;) Great ideas, Carol!
Love all the pretty ideas for hanging your stockings! I don’t have a mantle, so these are perfect for me!
