Our Summer Bedroom Refresh
A little about our bedroom:
The bedroom faces east. It naturally gets a lot of natural light. Although in summer the sun is more from the south, we still get so much morning light through our plantation shutters. I often keep the shutters tilted up to defuse the light and keep the room from heating up during the day.
Our bedroom is painted Sea Salt by Sherwin-Williams (but all our paint was Benjamin Moore). It’s described as a green-grey-blue, but it shows as blue in our bedroom and living room. It is the most beautiful color anytime, but in spring and summer, it becomes magical. Depending on the time of day and year, it changes from barely blue to a lovely grey blue.
The ceiling is tinted 50% Sea Salt. Often the reflection of the swimming pool shimmers across our ceiling. It creates a fairy-like light show.
I change the bed linens theme about four times a year with different duvets and comforters. I even have Christmas sheets!
Our Spring Bedroom Decor Looked Like This
In March I updated our bedroom from a winter look to a spring look: Here is what it looked like until a week ago.
Nola loves laying on our bed – all four corners.
I bought the French Linen duvet cover and three pillow shams last spring. They are from Annie Sieke. (Unfortunately, they are no longer available.) I love the color and the linen feel.
This year, I wanted to add a light feel with a springy and floral comforter. After a lot of searching, I found the perfect white quilt with a blue floral pattern at Touch of Class.
Not only did the new comforter go with the French Linen duvet, I was so pleased that it complimented the bed skirt. This plaid pattern bed skirt was custom-made for our bed when we moved into our home eleven years ago.
I also found these pretty blue sheets in a small abstract pattern. I loved the sweet little blue design.
My dad taught me how to make “army corners” when I was a little girl. It’s also called hospital corners. I taught my kids to make them too. The method keeps your top sheet nice and tight.
Here’s a great “how-to” if you don’t know how to make hospital corners.
The first thing I did to transition to a summer bedroom was to remove the French linen duvet. We certainly weren’t using it. The bed looked immediately lighter.
Next, I removed the pillow on the bench. We need a pillow for support when we sit on the bench. This pillow was a thrift store find in Atlanta.
The fabric and texture is too heavy for summer.
To give the bed a really lighter look for summer, I brought back the white coverlet that I bought a few years ago. It’s one we really love for the lightweight and airy look.
I loved it so much that I bought twins for our twin-bed guest room.
The white ruffled shams are the twin bed size which are plenty big for the pile of pillows on the bed.
The blue and white floral quilt is two-sided.
I decided to try the small primarily blue and white design. I folded it in thirds.
On the bench, I added the two lumbar pillows that I made last spring for our living room swivel chairs.
With the bed finished, I added vases with fresh flowers on each of our nightstands. The small tree is faux and alternates between our bedroom and the entry.
The one thing that I’ve been looking for our bedroom is new lamps. We need taller, solid, 3-way lamps.
I never realized that these paintings (a friend is an artist) are so fallish. I need to find something more summery for not.
I decided to switch the blue and white quilt to the floral side. Which design do you like better?
What do you think of our master bedroom makeover? It was simple and didn’t cost a penny. I love the airy feel of the room when I walk into it.
Now let’s look at 10 more summer bedroom update ideas.

Hi Carol,
Love your summer update for your bedroom! Where did you purchase your monogram pillow?
Thanks!
Sarah
Thank you, Sarah. So happy you visited Bluesky at Home and liked the bedroom. I had the monogram made by a friend who owns a monogram service. Then I made it into a pillow. If you have a place locally that makes monograms, you can then have it made into a pillow. If not, Etsy has lots of vendors.
