3 Quick and Easy DIY Patriotic Vignettes

Are you starting to think about the upcoming Memorial Day celebration in a few weeks? I have 3 quick and easy DIY patriotic vignettes you can whip up in a jiffy.

Since we didn’t have big parades or parties the last two years, I think we should really celebrate this year with red, white and blue.

I’ve mentioned before that I love patriotic holidays. We can reuse all the red, white and blue decorations. We can be resourceful and think of different ways to use the same decorations. These 3 easy DIY patriotic vignettes will give you inspiration for the entire summer.

Who doesn’t love a 3~day weekend? Of course, let’s not forget the real reason that we celebrate Memorial Day ~ honoring those who have served our country. We have so many heroes to honor this particular year. Not just those who serve in a military or first responder capacity. Now we celebrate our doctors, nurses, truck drivers, health care workers, food bank volunteers ~ the list is endless.

I did a sweep of Instagram and found so many fabulous patriotic vignettes. I had tons of inspiration. Could I create my own Memorial Day decorations ~ vignettes for our mantle, our coffee table, and the console in our breakfast room? Could I do it using only supplies that I already had on hand, no running to Joann or Hobby Lobby?

And to make this really fun, could I create these DIY patriotic vignettes in 1 hour?

Sweet Shark and I brought all our red, white, and blue decorations down from the attic: all the flags, signs, stars, pinwheels, ribbon, flowers, and beads.

To get ready, I cleared off the mantle and the console, made a spot on the coffee table, and opened my box of patriotic goodies. Now I am ready to make my 3 quick and easy DIY patriotic vignettes.

DIY PATRIOTIC VIGNETTES: 3 DIY DECORATING IDEAS

In my head, I had some ideas of what I wanted to make for each area. A few of my Instagram inspiration photos were in my head. Now, I was ready and set. I set the oven timer for 1 hour.

THE COFFEE TABLE

I used Sarah of Mockingbird Market as my inspiration for the coffee table. She created a simple setting with a woven basket, mason jars, and flags. Here is Sarah’s vignette.

Since I have several blue mason jars, I loved this idea. I didn’t have a round woven basket, but I did have a round cake stand, check fabric, and flags.

I folded the check fabric in the center of the coffee table and set the white cake stand on top. (If I wasn’t on the clock, I would have ironed the fabric!)

I did have to empty 2 of the mason jars first (1 had orzo in one and the other had chocolate chips!).

Then I filled all three with red shred (which I’ve had for almost 16 years, saved from the welcome bags from my older daughter’s wedding.) to hold the flags steady. I had red, white, and blue beads which I drapped around the jars and let hang off the cake stand.

An easy and pretty patriotic vignette right smack in the center of the room. This would be cute on your kitchen counter, too.

Notice the little bit of check pillow on the sofa? That’s another perfect patriotic project.

TIME: about 10 minutes.

THE PARTIOTIC MANTLE

My inspiration for the mantle was created by Allison at Queen of the Farmhouse. I loved her banner and signs.

Once again, I used mason jars. This time I filled the mason jars with red, white, and blue individual beads to hold the flags ~ tall ones. Allison used a U~S~A on her mantle and I luckily had similar letters.

I had a banner of stars that I had used in previous years, but this time I used the individual stars on the mantle. I found several pieces of blue curly ribbon in my patriotic decorations box so I tied them around the neck of the mason jars.

Pretty simple, but I like the clean look.

TIME: 12 minutes

BREAKFAST ROOM CONSOLE TABLE

This patriotic vignette took the longest to make. This vignette from Jessica of Orchard Slope was what I had in mind.

I really wanted to use my antique captain’s box.

Unfortunately, I had put the box upstairs a couple of weeks ago and I didn’t want to take the time to bring it downstairs. (Actually, Sweet Shark carried it upstairs and I didn’t think I could carry it back downstairs.) But I thought that my big DIY painted flag would be a perfect backdrop. I love this sign that I made last year.

Once the flag was in place, the rest of the patriotic vignette came together quickly.

• I added several pinwheels that in previous years I hung from our breakfast room chandelier. I did have to pin them together using paper clips.
• A blue vase that I have literally had for years
• Red roses left from my Kentucky Derby decorations
• One more star left from last year’s banner
• 2 dish towels
• 2 votive candle holders.

This came together much more quickly than I thought it would.

I actually loved how this patriotic vignette on the console table turned out.

TIME: 25 minutes

So my total time for creating these 3 DIY patriotic vignettes? 47 minutes!! I proved to myself that I could create and do it on a deadline ~ even a deadline that I set for myself. Maybe this is something you should try.

Do you give yourself deadlines to get tasks completed?

It is very satisfying. I could easily have gotten sidetracked ~ stop to check email or my Instagram. Put a load of dirty clothes in the washing machine. Having a deadline kept me focused on this one task. Now the house is ready for Memorial Weekend. I like that we can enjoy it for a few weeks.

TIP: Last year I started making a list every day (except the weekends) of the tasks I want to accomplish each day. It’s really made a difference in my productivity.
