Spray Paint Makeovers: Discarded Table and Free Candlesticks

What do a flea market table, free candlesticks and some spray paint have in common? As we all know, spray paint is one of the best DIY inventions ever created, along with hot glue guns, stitch witch, and Mod Podge. For now, let’s stick with 2 spray paint makeovers ~ how to take a table and candlesticks from discards to divas and from useless to useful.

Of course, my table and my candlesticks have stories to tell. Don’t most spray paint projects have stories? So I’m going to share the story of a flea market table and a freebie set of candlesticks and a 2 spray paint makeovers~ simple, inexpensive spray paint, 1 of the 7 wonders of the world.

Oh, and at the last minute, I discovered I had 1 more item to add to my spray paint makeovers. And because it’s something we’ve had for years and I have no idea how much we paid for it, it doesn’t count in my “under $10”, right?

It’s the little things that count and these items are small, non~descript accessories that you might not notice, unless you paint them shiny, glitzy, blinging metallic gold and brass. And then they are super wonderful.

Let’s Talk Table

Like so many repurposed projects, this one started at a flea market. I spied this table and liked it for

  • its shape
  • its size
  • its color
  • its condition
  • its price

I liked the round table shape and the relatively small size that would fit in so many places as a side table. It was already painted a soft grey and it was in excellent condition. I usually look for pieces that need to repainted or need some embellishment, so this little table was just fine as is. And the price? I think I paid about $6 or $7 for it. I didn’t have to think twice about buying it.

At first, I used the table as a side table in our living room between our 2 Bergere chairs.

When my daughter and I completely rearranged our living room, we didn’t have a place for the little grey table. For some reason, I set it outside. So for a whole year, it suffered from rain and heat and sun. I knew it wasn’t a good idea to leave it outside. One day last spring, I noticed that the bottom shelf had split. Sweet Shark offered to glue it back together ~ he loves super glue. After that the table sat in the garage for another 6  months.

Then 2 weeks ago, while I was spray painting pumpkins gold and copper and brass, I thought what the heck, why don’t I paint the table metallic and put it in Sweet Shark’s bar next to the staircase? I certainly have plenty of glassware to put on it.

Because the hardware in Sweet Shark’s bar is brass, I painted the table with brass metallic spray paint. First I did sand some of the chippy feet and the top was rough in places so it got sanded, too.

Now it fills the space nicely, provides a spot for some more crystal and Sweet Shark’s new brass drink shaker that we bought in Savannah last month. That poor, little neglected table finally has a proper place to hang out and get noticed.

Candlesticks, Anyone?

Who doesn’t love candlesticks? I don’t see any hands. Good, because this set of candlesticks definitely needed some attention. 2 1/2 years ago when my son moved to Waco for his first nursing position, I was helping him load up the last of his things that didn’t fit in the moving van or his truck. And it just so happened that these candlesticks didn’t make the cut. He was ready to throw them out, but one look at me and he knew better.

So mama got some candlesticks. And where have they spent the past 2 1/2 years? First on a shelf in the garage, and then they sat on the aforementioned grey table. 2 cast aside items that had so much potential. Well, as you can imagine, once I spray painted the grey table brass, I couldn’t leave the candlesticks to wallow in garage limbo any longer. My large spray shelter was going to have 1 more visitor.

I had just enough gold spray paint to finish the job. Like the candlesticks in Beauty and the Beast, these came to life when kissed with a little gold spray paint. And now they have a place of fall decor honor on our entry table.

So these 2 forgotten, discarded and cast aside home decor items finally got some new life, a new purpose, and new glitz and glam with metallic spray paint. All for under $10. If I only had thought of doing these spray paint makeovers 2 years ago. Well, better late than never. And then I remembered 1 more thing that needed some spray paint love.

We bought 2 of these magazine racks years ago; 1 has always been in our powder bath. We bought them when I was going through a rustic, rusty, western Wyoming decorating binge (blame it on 2 trips to Jackson Hole). The look didn’t fit the powder bath which is a bit dressy and has brushed brass fixtures. From rustic to ritzy with a little brass spray paint.

Now the magazine rack is a better fit in the powder bath and picks up the brass~colored pattern in the wall paper and the brushed brass faucet.

Much better. Only Krylon Metallic Spray Paints were used in the spray paint makeovers of these items. No other forgotten pieces were harmed in the transformation of this discarded table, free candlesticks and rustic magazine rack.

If you like these ideas, then be sure to PIN them.

  1. You are on a roll! I’m just a little jealous that you find these good things around your house. That might mean that I donate just a little too quickly here or I might have those things too. Yay for gold spray paint!! You can never have too many little tables or candlesticks.

  2. Carol,
I have been a gold spray painting crazy woman this past year. After seeing your copper, along with the gold I see more spray paint in my future! Such pretty makeovers.

  3. I think brass is a classic, but I know it’s also hot right now, so your new pieces are right on trend and look perfect in their new places. And yes, spray paint is awesome. I love quick makeovers and spray paint rules!
